Brian Nichols breaks down the immigration debate into three critical parts, examining arguments from both sides of the aisle. He explores why this issue has become such a political powder keg in 2024 and challenges the open borders mentality of yesteryear. Are we dealing with families seeking a better life, or is there a more sinister element exploiting our compassion?

The episode takes a hard look at the strain on America's resources, from overcrowded schools to overwhelmed hospitals. Nichols questions the hypocrisy of politicians living in gated communities while advocating for open borders. He also delves into the national security implications of unchecked immigration in a post-9/11 world. Is our empathy being weaponized against us?

Nichols doesn't just highlight problems; he proposes solutions. Drawing inspiration from unexpected sources like Canada and Australia, he suggests a comprehensive approach to immigration reform. But can we strike a balance between compassion and national security? The host also tackles controversial topics like assimilation, language barriers, and the potential impact on American culture and values.

In a thought-provoking conclusion, Nichols challenges viewers to consider where they stand on this crucial issue. He urges listeners to engage in tough conversations and make hard choices to preserve the America we love for future generations. Don't miss this riveting episode that promises to challenge your beliefs and spark crucial dialogue about the future of our nation.

Today we're diving headfirst into the fiery immigration debate, a political powder keg that's been simmering for years and is now ready to explode. Today, we're gonna break this down into three parts. First, we're looking at the arguments yes from both sides. We have the secure the border folks and the no human is illegal camp. Then we're going to dig into why this issue has become such a hot button issue. And finally, we're going to tackle the elephant in the room, why the open borders mentality of yesteryear just does not cut it in today's world. So part one understanding the immigration debate.

Unknown Speaker  0:44
On one side, we've got folks who want to tighten up border security. They're concerned about jobs, crime and, of course, preserving an American culture. On the flip side, we've got people arguing that immigration is the backbone of America in that it is through diversity that we find our strength.

Unknown Speaker  1:04
Okay, but here's where things get real, folks in 2024 this isn't just some academic debate anymore. It's become a political hot potato that could make or break the election. Why? Well, that brings us to part two.

Unknown Speaker  1:19
We've got to face facts, the situation at the southern border isn't just a trickle, it's a full blown flood.

Unknown Speaker  1:28
We're literally talking millions of people coming in faster than you have ever seen in history. And it's not just families looking for a better life, but rather, we've got drug traffickers, human smugglers and folks from literally all over the world trying to use our border like it's some type of revolving door to enter into the United States. Now, I know some of you are out there thinking, well, Aren't these just people who are seeking opportunity a better life? Of Sure. I mean, yeah, there's definitely going to be some folks who are out there looking for a better opportunity, but there's also a right way and a wrong way to do things. Our ancestors came through legal channels, not by sneaking across the border with fentanyl. And that brings us to part three, the real meat and potatoes of this issue, we've got to wake up and smell the coffee. The world isn't the same world. It was 50, 100 150 years ago, guys, we're not dealing with the same situation anymore. This is an entirely new ball game. And here's the cold, harsh truth, there are people out there who want to do us harm, and they're using our own empathy, our own good nature, against us. That means they're exploiting our Open Arms policy to slip in undetected. And folks in today's world, with the technology being what it is, it doesn't take an army to cause massive damage. One bad actor with the right know how can cause absolute chaos? So let me ask you this, what's the point in having a country if we don't know who's coming in, it's like throwing a house party just leaving your front door wide open. I mean, yeah, you might meet some cool folks, but you're also gonna probably wake up with some of your stuff missing. Now, I know there are some libertarians out there screaming about freedom of movement and open borders, and, look, I get it in a perfect world. Maybe that would work, but we don't live in a perfect world. Do we? We live in a real world where there are really bad people who do really bad things, and it's our job to not just protect ourselves, but also our loved ones. So to my libertarian friends, I just gotta say it, it's time to stop being useful idiots for the open borders crowd. We've got to deal with the world as it is, not as we wish it was. It's like that old saying Good fences make good neighbors. Well, guess what good borders make for a safer country. And let's talk about the cultural aspects for a minute. Now, we're not just talking about people who are coming here for jobs. We are talking about folks who might have values that are literally completely at odds with our American way of life.

Unknown Speaker  4:21
Now, like we're all for diversity of thought, but there's a difference between diversity and division,

Unknown Speaker  4:30
and we need to make sure that the people coming into our country are ready to embrace our values, not undermine them,

Unknown Speaker  4:39
and let's not forget about the strain on our resources. That means our schools, our hospitals, our social services, they're all feeling this pressure. It's like we've been trying to fit a gallon of water into a pint sized glass. Something's got to give. And what ends up happening is usually it's the American taxpayer who ends up footing.

Unknown Speaker  5:00
That bill. And here's the thing that really just makes my blood boil. It is this just complete hypocrisy of it all. I mean, we've got politicians who live in quite literal gated communities, who have armed security telling us that, Oh, you don't need to secure your borders. It's like you got some guy who's got, like, the latest state of the art home security system, who is in turn looking at his neighbor and saying, You don't need to lock your doors, you bigot. And

Unknown Speaker  5:31
don't even get me started on the national security aspect.

Unknown Speaker  5:35
First of all, I am a libertarian. So anything in the post 911 world where more and more government surveillance, government intrusion has been layered in. I'm not about that, but in a post 911 world, can we really just be lax about letting anyone come into our country like you wouldn't play a game of Russian Roulette if you knew that five of the bullets were in the chamber

Unknown Speaker  6:04
and like, I kind of look at the border debate in the same type of mentality. Now, what I'm not saying, by the way, is that we should just shut the door to our borders completely.

Unknown Speaker  6:18
The reality is that America has always been a nation of immigrants, and yes, that is part of what makes us great, but there is a huge difference between being a melting pot and being a free for all. What we need is a system that actually works, that lets people in who want to contribute to our society, well, keeping out those who look to harm us and destroy our culture and destroy our way of life. So what's the solution? I'm glad you asked. It's not as simple as building a wall or throwing open the gates, but what we need instead, tell me, if you heard this before, a comprehensive approach. So that means we need to secure the borders and yes, also, we need to streamline our legal immigration system so we can make it easier for the good folks to come in, but make it harder for the bad folks to slip through. So let's look. I can't believe I'm even saying this out loud, but let's look to countries like Canada and Australia. Yes, I know the super conservative right wing countries they are not. What do they do, though? What are these lefty countries like Canada and Australia do? Well, they prioritize skills, they prioritize education, and they prioritize the ability to contribute to their economy.

Unknown Speaker  7:43
Why can't we do something similar like this isn't about discrimination or whatever left wing Bugaboo is being tossed in to try and foil this conversation. This is about what's best for America and Americans,

Unknown Speaker  8:03
and let's not forget about the root causes of illegal immigration. If we really want to solve this problem, what we need to do is look at the reasons people are leaving their home countries in droves. I mean, maybe I don't know. Instead of sending billions of dollars in foreign aid that ends up in the pockets of corrupt politicians. I don't know, maybe a good first step would be instead focusing that money and those resources towards, I don't know, the people who actually need them. Or how about this, maybe we should just take a step back and not be sending billions of dollars overseas.

Unknown Speaker  8:44
Now let's talk about the economic impact for a second. We hear a lot about immigrants taking jobs from Americans, but let's be real, there's tons of jobs that Americans just aren't lining up to do. So what we need is a system that allows for temporary workers to come in and allow those workers to do the jobs that need doing, but give them a chance to go home. It's not about replacing American workers, but rather just filling those gaps in the labor market.

Unknown Speaker  9:12
And here's the catch, we need to make sure that these guest worker programs aren't being abused. We can't have companies exploiting cheap labor at the expense of American workers. Yes, it's a delicate balance, but it's one we need to strike if we expect our economy to keep humming along. And by the way, let's talk about assimilation for a minute. We used, I remember we used to be proud of being a melting pot E Pluribus Unum from many one where people from all over the world came together to become Americans, but somewhere along the line, we've lost that, so now we have communities that are more like little isolated islands versus being part of some great American tapestry. So what we need to do is get back to the idea that be.

Unknown Speaker  10:00
An American actually means something. It's not just about where you were born, but about the values you hold and the contribution you make to your society.

Unknown Speaker  10:12
And that brings me to another point, language, no, not not those words, but rather English, the English language, which is the glue that holds our society together. It's what allows us to literally communicate, to understand each other and to be part of a legitimate national conversation. But then we've got kids graduating American high schools who can barely speak English, who can barely read. How are they supposed to succeed

Unknown Speaker  10:41
anywhere, let alone in this country. How are they supposed to be part of the American dream if they can't even understand it?

Unknown Speaker  10:50
And let's not forget about the impact on our political system. I mean, we've got states giving driver's licenses to illegals. We've got cities declaring themselves sanctuary cities for people who are here illegally. I mean, some places are even talking about letting non citizens vote in elections. That's That's fucking madness, pardon my language, like we're talking about fundamentally changing, not just what it means to be an American citizen. We're fundamentally changing what America is

Unknown Speaker  11:25
now. I know some of you are thinking, Well, Brian, you're just being too harsh. These are just people looking for a better life.

Unknown Speaker  11:33
I get that. I do in my heart. It goes out to the folks who are fleeing terrible situations, but we've got to stop this, do good mentality, and we've got to be realistic. We cannot save the whole world by bringing the whole world here. We've got to look out for our own citizens first, it's why, when you're on the airplane and they're doing that little teaser before you all take off, they say, Please fasten the mask to yourself first and then help those around you.

Unknown Speaker  12:08
Oh, and by the way, let's talk about the drug problem for a second, because we've got a full blown opioid crisis in this country, and a lot of those drugs, if not most, are coming right across the southern border or the northern border. I mean, every day, we are losing hundreds of American lives. And it's it's like we're not even paying attention during covid, we would have a death counter on TV all day long. But here, we don't talk about it. And by the way, it's not just the drugs, it's the violence that comes with the drugs. It's the cartels. And by the way, these cartels, they aren't just content to push their poison. They're bringing their turf wars onto American soil.

Unknown Speaker  12:54
Okay? Doom and gloom. Brian, so what do we do now?

Unknown Speaker  12:58
Again? Thank you for asking. First off, what we need to do is be serious about border security. I'm not just talking about again, building a wall. Yes, that is part of it, but we need more Border Patrol agents. We need better technology to detect tunnels and drones. We need to crack down on visa overstays. We need a comprehensive approach that covers all the basis but it's not just about keeping people out again. We need to make it easier for the right people to come in.

Unknown Speaker  13:29
Our legal immigration system is a complete mess. It's slow, it's bureaucratic, and it's not meeting our needs. We need to streamline the process for skilled workers, for entrepreneurs who want to create jobs right here in America, we need to make it easier for them. We need to make it easier for the best and the brightest from around the world to come here and contribute to our society. And let's talk about refugees for a second. America has always been and will be a beacon of hope for the oppressed, but we've got to be smart about it. We've got to be better at vetting folks and making sure we're not just letting people in who want to do us harm. And we need to be able to be realistic about how many people we can actually absorb without putting so much strain on our small local communities. Now, I know again, some of you are thinking, Well, Brian, this all sounds great, but how do we pay for this? And that's actually a very fair question. As a libertarian, I do not like extra bills, but let me ask you this, how can we afford not to I mean literally the costs of illegal immigration in terms of social services, crime, the erosion of our national identity. I mean, these costs are astronomical. Investing in a better immigration system now is going to save us a ton of money and a ton of heartache down the road.

Unknown Speaker  14:58
So as we wrap this up.

Unknown Speaker  15:00
I want you to really think about where you stand on this issue.

Unknown Speaker  15:06
Are you still clinging to the We Are the World mentality, or are you ready to face reality and admit that maybe, just maybe, we need to be a little more careful about who we let into our house.

Unknown Speaker  15:24
Remember, folks, this isn't about hate or fear. It's about common sense and self preservation. It's about making sure that the America we love is still here for our kids and our grandkids, because if we don't get this right, we might not recognize the country that we're leaving them. So I ask you, please stop burying your head in the sand. Let's start having tough conversations and make hard choices, and let's do what needs to be done to keep America America, because at the end of the day,

Unknown Speaker  16:04
isn't that kind of what we all want? I hope I pray,

Unknown Speaker  16:10
all right, folks, before we wrap things up today, let's check in on how you did with last week's challenge of the week. We had some great responses, but want to highlight two in particular. Now, for those playing along in the home game last week, I asked you to talk to local business owners, ask them what they would do if there was suddenly an increase in money supply, what would they do? Would they raise prices? Would they change their inventory practices? And then I asked you to check out the prices of everyday items in your area, and I ask you to keep track of them and see if you've noticed any prices increasing areas, like food, gas, rent, so on and so forth. And then I wanted you to think about your own savings and debts and how they might be impacted if the value of the dollar suddenly changed. And we got some great responses. First up, we've got Jim, good old Jim from Ohio, he said, Brian. I talked to Joe. He owns the local hardware store here, and he was shocked at the idea of paying taxes on increased inventory. He also said he'd probably have to take out loans just to cover his tax bill, which, in turn, would probably make it harder for him to invest in new products or hire more help. And as for prices, I've been tracking them at the grocery store. My bill is up 15% in just the past month.

Unknown Speaker  17:27
Yeah, that sucks. Sorry, Jim. Thanks for your insight, and I hope that gives you guys a little bit of a sneak peek of what real small business owners are facing every single day. Let's go to our friend Sarah in Florida. She writes, I spoke with several small business owners. A restaurant owner said that she would likely have to sell off some kitchen supplies just to pay taxes. A construction owner worried about how it would affect his ability to take on bigger projects. And then Sarah says for her own finances, she realized that her savings would be worth a lot less. So now she's looking into some inflation resistant investments. Maybe going to reach out to our good buddy, Joe Lombardi from iron Hawk financial. Great, great stuff, right there, right and again, it's important, I dare say, crucial, to consider how big economic changes could impact all types of different businesses. So, perfect stories. Thank you, folks. Keep your responses to the Challenge of the Week coming, which actually goes to our next part, which is this week's challenge of the week. And here is what I want. I want you to go out and have a conversation with someone who fundamentally disagrees with you on immigration. But here's the catch, I don't want you to try to change their mind. Just listen. I want you to understand where they're coming from. I want you to understand what their concerns are, what are their hopes, and then shoot me an email Brian at Brian Nichols show.com and let me know how it went. Did you learn anything new? Did it change your perspective at all? Let us know, we would love to hear about it. All right, folks, and let's bring today's episode home with a question from one of our listeners. This one comes from Josie down in Georgia. Josie asks Brian, I genuinely appreciate your pragmatic approach to libertarian ideas. Had been listening for a while, but I have a question, how do you respond to libertarians who accuse you of compromising on principles when you suggest that some government intervention might be necessary in certain situations? And that's a great question, Josie, and here's my take, because I get hit with this all the time. Principles are important, but they're not worth much if they don't work in the real world,

Unknown Speaker  19:46
we're dealing with complex issues that don't always have clear cut solutions, and if sticking rigidly to libertarian principles means we're actually hurting people, then sorry, I think it's important to reexamine that and no.

Unknown Speaker  20:00
Before I can already hear you guys. No, I'm not advocating for big government, but what I am saying is we need to be willing to consider all options when it comes to actually, I don't know, making our world a better place, and that might mean that sometimes you might need to have some minimal state involvement in extreme cases, it's not about compromising principles. It's about applying them in a way that actually works and doesn't hurt the most vulnerable among us. Remember, the core of libertarianism is about maximizing individual liberty, but we have to be realistic about how to achieve that in a complex modern society, sometimes that might require solutions that aren't strictly libertarian in the traditional sense. So great question from Josie. Keep those questions coming, and don't forget about your Challenge of the Week. I am looking forward to hearing your responses again. Email me at Brian, at Brian Nichols show.com

Unknown Speaker  20:59
this is Brian Nichols signing off. Remember, it's not enough just to win arguments. We've got to win hearts and minds. So get out there, have those conversations, and let's build a better future together until next time, keep thinking, keep questioning and keep fighting for liberty. You.
